Payout ratio is hidden when reported earnings push it above 120%, which is common for REITs and companies with large one-off charges; the ratio is still most useful within a sector.

How to compare dividend stocks

Start with yield and payout ratio together. A 6% yield is only attractive if the company earns enough to cover it; a payout ratio well above 80% leaves little room for a bad year. Utilities and REITs run structurally higher payout ratios than consumer or industrial companies, so compare within sectors.

Then check the record. Companies that have raised their dividend for decades — Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo — trade a lower starting yield for a payout that has historically grown. High-yield names like AT&T and Philip Morris offer more income today with less certainty about growth, and recent years show that even long streaks can end.

  • Use each stock page for live yield, payout schedule, and income projections.
  • Use ETF calculators when you want diversified exposure instead of single-company risk.
  • Use the dividend calculator to model contributions, taxes, and reinvestment for any holding.
